  • Day 2 | Into Jerez - Raul Moreno

We'll start our adventure being picked up by a minibus and heading south into the Sherry Triangle. Our first producer of the trip is Raul Moreno. Located in Pago Balbaína, one of Jerez’s most prized estates, Raúl was persistent with local vineyard owners and has managed to eke out a collection of older vines that contribute to this project. Local white and red varieties are the mainstays. Grapes undergo various winemaking approaches that include skin fermentation, fermentation in locally-made amphora, maturation under flor yeast (like sherry and Jura wine) with a period of maturation in used Manzanilla and Amontillado barrels.

With Raul we'll enjoy a vineyard visit, wine tasting, and lunch. After lunch we'll drive to the city of Jerez and check into our hotel.

  • Day 3 | Bodega Vinifícate

Today we’ll meet the folks at Bodega Vinifícate in the town of San Fernando. Brothers Miguel and Jose Gomez worked for years with different winemaking cooperatives in the area, and decided to release their first biodynamic wine in 2011. They are the perfect hosts for an intro into the local wine scene. The two didn’t have much when they started, just enough to buy some grapes and rent some space to make the wine. By increasing production vintage to vintage, they’ve managed to gather enough equipment to build their own little winery and acquire their first little vineyard in the Balbaína estate of Jerez, known for its pure albariza soils. We'll learn all about their awesome project, taste their wines and then head for lunch under the sun in the Bay of Cadiz’s famous esteros.

  • Day 4 | Into the heart of Manzanilla territory

Drive to Sanlucar de Barrameda to visit Bodegas Alonso, a traditional sherry bodega in the heart of Manzanilla territory.  Francisco and Fernanda Ascensio rescued the sherry warehouses and soleras (casks of aged fortified wines) of several famous former producers in order to save and continue the important sherry tradition of Salúcar de Barrameda. Learn about the region’s distinctive solera system and taste very old and rare wines before sitting for lunch under their grape covered pergola. We will then return to our hotel for a free evening.

After checking out of the hotel, we'll drive to Mijas for a real treat! Mythopia, a world reference for natural wines, will have an Andalusian version made in Mijas under the direction of Simbad Romero. They wines and new project are going to be a lot of fun to discover!

We'll then head for lunch at one of Spain’s “Templos del Producto” Los Marinos de Jose in Fuengirola. After lunch, we'll continue on to Granada and check in to hotel.

  • Day 6 | Bodega Cauzón

This morning we will visit Ramón Saavedra’s Bodega Cauzón. After working 15 years as a chef on Spain’s Costa Brava, Saavedra returned to his native Granada to take over his family’s small personal vineyard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He planted an additional 10 acres in Syrah, Tinta Fina and Cabernet Sauvignón and has been entirely organic since 1999. After hanging out with Ramón and getting to know his project and wines, we’ll head for lunch in one of our favorite countryside taverns. We will then drive back to Granada.

Those that want can tour La Alhambra and go for a stroll in the beautiful Albaicin neighborhood.

  • Day 7 | Barranco Oscurro

This morning we are off for a visit and tasting at Barranco Oscurro vineyard, located high in the Sierra de la Contraviesa mountains, one of the highest altitude vineyards in Europe and only 6 miles from the sea. Founder Manuel Valenzuela arrived there in 1979 and was a pioneer of the organic movement in Spain. He has since created a biodynamic vineyard, where he works with his son. We will have lunch at a countryside restaurant and then return to Granada for a private evening visit to Alhambra and the Nasrid Palace. Prepare to have your mind blown! After the visit, enjoy your last evening out in Granada at leisure.
